Day-1~2 Osaka

On your first day, you have two options: you can either rent a camper at Kansai International Airport as soon as you arrive, or visit the World Expo first and then pick up your RV at the Tamatsukuri Station Branch after the event.

The Expo site is located on Yumeshima, an artificial island in Osaka with views of the Seto Inland Sea. Spanning 1.55 km², it features a central pavilion, southern waters, and western greenery, all designed to connect visitors to the world through the sea and sky.

The theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” encourages people to reflect on how they want to live and reach their full potential. It also aims to inspire global collaboration in creating a sustainable society that supports diverse visions of the future.

Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku

Shinsekai is a historic district in Osaka, developed before WWII and revitalized afterward. At its center is Tsutenkaku Tower, inspired by Paris’ Eiffel Tower, which was built in 1912 and reconstructed in 1956. Standing 103 meters tall, it offers an observatory, open-air deck, and even a slide at the base.

Shinsekai is also famous for kushikatsu, Osaka’s deep-fried skewered specialty, with varieties ranging from meats to vegetables, and even desserts. Many kushikatsu restaurants stay open 24/7, buzzing with activity at night.

The Expo ’70 Commemorative Park in Osaka, located 30 minutes north of the city, was the site of the 1970 Japan World Exposition, the first World Expo in Asia. Today, it’s a popular spot for nature, sports, museums, and seasonal flowers. The park features wide lawns, gardens, and 5,000 cherry trees, making it a top cherry blossom viewing spot in early April.

Ise shrine

The Ise Shrine in Ise City is one of the most sacred Shinto shrines, dedicated to the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu. It has been a spiritual center for over 2,000 years and is rebuilt every 20 years.

A typical visit takes 60–90 minutes, starting from Uji Bridge, which leads to the shrine. The grounds are simple, with gravel paths and wooden structures surrounded by a peaceful forest. Visitors can purify themselves at a riverside site using water from the Isuzugawa River before reaching the main sanctuary, where photography is not allowed. The Sun Goddess is enshrined here, and the shrine features unique architectural elements, like forked roof finishes.

Meoto Iwa

Meoto Iwa, the Wedded Rocks, are sacred rocks in Futami, Ise City. The larger rock represents the husband, the smaller one the wife, connected by a shimenawa rope that symbolizes the divide between the spiritual and earthly realms. The rope is replaced three times a year.

Visitors are advised to visit at high tide when the rocks are separated by water, with the best view at sunrise in summer, when Mt. Fuji may be visible in the distance.

Nearby, the Futami-Okitama Shrine is home to frog sculptures, believed to bring good luck, as the word “frog” (kaeru) also means “to return.” The path leads to Ryugu Shrine and ends at Futami Plaza, a complex with shops, restaurants, and an aquarium. Close by, the Hinjitsukan, once a guesthouse for Ise shrine visitors, is now a museum.

Tea Museum

A new facility opened in August 2021 in Uji, a city famous for its tea, to highlight the region’s tea culture and history. The 2.5-hectare site preserves the “Uji River Taiko-zutsumi” remains, excavated in 2007, and is divided into two areas: the Historical Site Zone and the Exchange Zone.

In the Historical Site Zone, visitors can explore the reconstructed “Uji River Taiko-zutsumi,” built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi to improve land and water routes in Fushimi. The zone also features the “Shukei Tea Garden,” a “Garden of Trees” with seasonal plants, and a “Nodate Garden” for outdoor events.

The Exchange Zone Includes Chazuna, which houses a museum, restaurant, and store showcasing Uji tea and local history. Daily activities offer hands-on experiences like grinding matcha, tea tastings, and crafting.

Byodoin Temple

Byodoin Temple is a famous example of Buddhist Pure Land (Jodo) architecture. Originally built in 998 as a villa for the powerful Fujiwara no Michinaga, it was later turned into a temple by his son. The temple’s most iconic feature is the Phoenix Hall, built in 1053 and named for its phoenix-shaped design and the two statues on its roof. This hall is featured on the back of Japan’s ten yen coin.

The Phoenix Hall is one of the few original Heian Period wooden structures to survive disasters. Visitors can take short guided tours of its interior where they can see a statue of the Amida Buddha.

Byodoin also has a unique treasure house mostly underground to preserve the view of the Phoenix Hall. It displays valuable artifacts and cultural treasures, with multilingual information about the temple’s history and construction.

Biwako

Daio Wasabi Farm

The popular teamLab Borderless digital art museum has relocated to the newly opened Azabudai Hills in Tokyo, opening on February 9, 2024. Tickets must be purchased online in advance.

Unlike its Toyosu counterpart, teamLab Planets, Borderless focuses on nature, the elements, and interactive experiences with flowers, animals, and water. Visitors explore over 50 artworks in a space without set paths—art spills and interacts freely across rooms.

The museum also features a traditional tea house, where digital flowers bloom in your tea. For a souvenir, you can color a marine animal and have it printed on items like T-shirts or tote bags.The museum’s borderless nature allows visitors to get lost, discovering new surprises with each step. Imperial Palace

The Imperial Palace is located on the former site of Edo Castle, in the heart of Tokyo, near Tokyo Station. It is the residence of Japan’s Imperial Family.

Edo Castle was the seat of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1867). After the shogunate fell in 1868, the capital moved to Tokyo, and the new Imperial Palace was completed in 1888. The palace was destroyed during World War II but rebuilt in the same style.

From the Kokyo Gaien plaza, visitors can view the iconic Nijubashi Bridge (Double Bridge). The front bridge is called Meganebashi (Eyeglass Bridge) for its shape, and the back bridge was once a wooden two-level bridge.

The Tokyo Skytree is a landmark and television broadcasting tower in Sumida, near Asakusa. At 634 meters, it is the tallest structure in Japan. A shopping complex and aquarium are located at its base.

The Skytree has two observation decks at 350 meters and 450 meters, offering stunning views of Tokyo. The Tembo Deck at 350 meters has three levels, with panoramic views, a café, souvenir shop, and the Musashi Sky Restaurant. The Tembo Galleria, at 450 meters, features a spiral ramp and a traditional observation floor with views over the city.

Visitors start on the 4th floor to buy tickets for the first deck, then take an elevator to the top. After exploring both decks, visitors return to the first deck and take the elevator down to the exit on the 5th floor.
