Points of when driving
on public roads
Always
stop at a red light
Make sure to stop completely at a red light, on a white line under the signal.
However, when a green arrow is displayed below the signal, you can proceed in the direction indicated.
Keep
Left-hand Traffic
When driving in Japan, keep to the left of the road.
Light vehicles such as bicycles also travel on the carriageway, so take care not to come into contact with them.
Wait
when turning right
When turning right at an intersection, approach the centre of the intersection and stop once. Make sure there are no oncoming vehicles going straight or turning left before turning right.
Stop completely

Make sure to stop completely at a stop sign or at a stop line on the road discribing "stop"

Always pause before a level crossing.
And also make sure there is space for at least one car on the other side.

Height limit
Only vehicles up to the height indicated can enter.
Slow down

Temporary stop
Make sure to pause once and proceed.
Speed limit
Drive at or below the indicated speed.
Direction limit
Do not proceed except in the direction indicated.
One way traffic
Can only pass in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Slippery
Drive with caution on slippery roads.

Watch out for animals jumping out.

Park the broken-down vehicle out of the way of traffic, you must turn on your emergency flashing hazard lights to warn other drivers that your vehicle is parked.

Traffic accidents
If involved in a traffic accident, first move your vehicle to a safe place out of the way of other traffic, and turn off the engine, to prevent the occurrence of secondary accidents.
And call the emergency number immediately.

If injured or ill : call 119 first and foremost.
And give the injured or sick person as much care and attention as you can.
After that, call 110 to ask for a proof of accident and to let the police know other informations.

If no one is injured or ill : call 110 without fail and report the accident, providing information about the location of the accident. And follow the police officer’s instructions, and
ask for a proof of accident to be issued.
Also photograph the damage to the other vehicle.

Peace of Mind Compensation
When you book a rental car through JAPAN ROAD TRIP, we ask you to subscribe to the 'Safety Compensation' plan, as vehicle repair costs are often expensive in the event of an accident.
This safety compensation costs from JPY 3,000~ per day, and in the event of an accident or breakdown, the vehicle is partially reduced for the cost of repairing the vehicle, as well as for compensation for property and bodily injury.
Amount to be borne by the customer
- Vehicle repair and interior repair costs:
The maximum cost of each repair is up to JPY 100,000. - NOC (Compensation for business damage):
JPY 100,000 if the vehicle can be driven on its own.
JPY 200,000 if the vehicle cannot be driven on its own or if the roof is damaged.
JPY 400,000 for overturned or total loss. - Damage insurance deductible:
JPY 100,000 (if our damage insurance is used).
→If our damage insurance is not used:
Repair costs for the other party (*Not a deposit).
Insurance coverage includes:

Bodily injury : Unlimited.
Property damage : Unlimited.
Personal injury protection : JPY 50 milion per person.
Self-service petrol stations
Check before filling up with petrol
- The type of petrol in your car.
RED : Regular petrol
YELLOW : High-octane petrol
GREEN : Diesel fuel - The position of the petrol filler opening.
How to fill up with petrol
1. Enter the refuelling lane and stop
Fit within the frame of the refuelling lane.
Then park so that the side of the car is parallel to the refuelling equipment.
After parking, apply the parking brake and turn off the engine.
2. Prepare to make a purchase on the touch screen
Select the type of petrol, refuelling quantity and payment method.
*Confirm the type of petrol in advance, as it is dangerous to get the wrong type of petrol for your car.
3. Touch the static electricity elimination sheet
Always touch the static electricity elimination sheet before refuelling to prevent petrol ignition or accidents caused by static electricity.
4. remove the refuelling cap and refuel
Insert the nozzle securely until it cannot go in any further.
Pull the lever firmly to refuel.
