Lawson Parking Now Campervan-Friendly!
#overnight-stays
Did you know that parking campervan in convenience stores, super market and many more big parking lots in Japan for a long time or over night is illegal? But guess what?! Lawson open their parking lots for campervan friendly over night stays!
Starting July 7, 2025, Lawson now allows car camping in its store parking lots. The trial will begin at six locations in the southern area of Chiba.
Travel needs are changing, with more people choosing flexible options like traveling with pets or working remotely. Since COVID-19, using cars as private spaces has also become popular to avoid crowds. At the same time, hotel prices in tourist areas have gone up, making car camping a more affordable choice. Campervan ownership is also growing, but places to stay are limited. In response, Lawson is launching a trial using “RV Park” to support car camping.

The Japan RV Association, which includes campervan manufacturers and related companies, certifies RV Parks as official car camping spots.
By December 2024, Japan had over 500 RV Parks nationwide. These parks are set up at a wide range of locations, including hot springs, hotels, roadside stations, and amusement parks.
To receive certification, a site must meet specific standards from the association. For example, it must offer 24-hour access to toilets and waste disposal, along with other basic services.
The average cost is around 2,500 to 3,000 yen per stay. Normally, site operators pay a 30,000 yen application fee plus a 10,000 yen annual registration fee. However, this special trial waives both fees.
To book a spot, users must register through a dedicated website. You’ll only pay the usage fee, and credit card is the only accepted payment method.
You can make your reservation here:

The trial runs from July 14, 2025, to June 30, 2026. During this period, guests can check in from 6:00 PM and must check out by 9:00 AM.
At the Lawson store, staff will:
・Confirm your reservation using a tablet
・Set up and remove signs for campervan spaces
・Provide a welcome kit (with a permit, info sheet, and one trash bag)
・Lend out a power cable reel
・Handle food waste (limited to one special bag per stay)

Before we introduce the 6 Lawson locations where you can stay overnight, JAPAN ROAD TRIP has rental locations all across Japan, so it’s easy to start your road trip wherever you like.
We also offer great early bird and long-term discounts, making your campervan rental even more affordable—so be sure to check them out! On top of that, if it’s your second time or more renting, you can enjoy an extra 5% off with our repeater discount.
Now, let’s take a look on where you can park and stay overnight!
