Campervan Rental Hokkaido: The Perfect 7-Day Summer 2026 Road Trip
#travel-plans
Looking for the perfect Hokkaido campervan rental itinerary for summer 2026? In summer, Hokkaido offers cool weather, wide open roads, and some of Japan’s most beautiful natural scenery. Because towns sit far apart, a campervan gives you more freedom and flexibility than trains.
On this 7-day road trip, you will first drive through lavender fields in Furano. Then you will head into the mountains and explore national parks. After that, you can relax in quiet lakeside Onsen towns before continuing along scenic coastal roads. Along the way, you will enjoy short and comfortable driving times. As a result, you can explore Hokkaido at your own pace and make the most of your summer adventure.

JAPAN ROAD TRIP has three rental locations in Hokkaido: Shin-Chitose Airport Branch, Sapporo Station Branch, and Chitose Station Branch.
Whether you start your journey right after landing at the airport or pick up your campervan after exploring the city, each location offers easy and convenient access.
With that said, let’s begin the perfect 7-day summer 2026 campervan road trip!
Day 1 – Arrival → Furano (Lavender Countryside)

Drive: Approx. 2.5 hours from New Chitose Airport
After picking up your campervan, head toward Furano, one of Hokkaido’s most famous summer destinations. The drive passes through open countryside and gentle hills, making it an easy and scenic first day.
In the afternoon, visit Farm Tomita, especially beautiful from mid to late July when the lavender reaches full bloom. The colorful flower fields create one of the most iconic summer views in Japan.
Next, stop at Shikisai no Oka for panoramic landscapes filled with seasonal flowers and rolling hills.
In the evening, park at a nearby campground or michi-no-eki (roadside station). Enjoy a quiet countryside sunset and your first night in the campervan.
Tip: Stock up on groceries and supplies in Furano before heading into more rural areas.

Day 2 – Biei → Daisetsuzan National Park

Drive: Approx. 1.5 hours
Start your morning in Biei with a visit to Shirogane Blue Pond. Its bright blue water and standing trees create a unique and photogenic scene. Nearby, Shirahige Waterfall offers another quick but impressive stop.
In the afternoon, continue to Daisetsuzan National Park, the largest national park in Japan. Ride the Asahidake Ropeway for sweeping mountain views, then take a short alpine hike. Even in August, temperatures here feel fresh and cool.
End the day in Sounkyo Onsen. Relax in a hot spring bath before staying overnight at a nearby campground or RV-friendly site.
Locations:
Day 3 – Daisetsuzan → Shiretoko Peninsula

Drive: Approx. 4 hours
Day 3 features one of the most scenic drives of the trip. Rural highways stretch across eastern Hokkaido, with wide open skies and minimal traffic.
By afternoon, arrive at the Shiretoko Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage area known for untouched wilderness. Walk the Shiretoko Five Lakes boardwalk and enjoy views of forests, mountains, and wildlife.
You can also explore dramatic coastal cliffs and waterfalls along the peninsula.
Stay overnight at a Shiretoko campground. With very little light pollution, this is one of the best stargazing spots in Hokkaido.

Day 4 – Shiretoko → Lake Akan

Drive: Approx. 3 hours
In the morning, consider taking a Shiretoko coastal boat cruise for a different perspective of the rugged cliffs and waterfalls.
Then drive south toward Lake Akan, a peaceful caldera lake surrounded by forests. Walk along the lakeshore or rent a canoe if the weather allows.
You can also visit Ainu Kotan, a small village where you can learn about the indigenous Ainu culture and traditions.
In the evening, relax in a local onsen bathhouse and enjoy a calm lakeside night.
Locations:
Day 5 – Lake Akan → Kushiro Marsh → Lake Toya

Drive: 4–5 hours total (with stops)
Start the day at Kushiro Marsh, Japan’s largest wetland. Stop at observation decks for panoramic views, then walk along the wooden boardwalk trails.
In the afternoon, begin the longer drive southwest toward Lake Toya. The scenery changes gradually, especially as you approach the volcanic landscapes near Toya.
In summer, Lake Toya often hosts nightly fireworks during peak season. Park at a lakeside campground and enjoy the peaceful evening atmosphere.
Locations:
Day 6 – Lake Toya → Noboribetsu → Otaru

Drive: Approx. 3 hours total
In the morning, visit Noboribetsu Jigokudani. Walk through steaming volcanic vents and bubbling hot springs along easy walking paths.
