Konosu Surprise Hinamatsuri
People know Konosu City for its hina dolls from the Edo era. It is also famous for its beautiful kimono dresses. Craftsmen from Edo (now Tokyo) taught themselves in the region. The annual “Konosu Bikkuri Hinamatsuri” features the city’s famous hina dolls, called “Hina-ningyo.” Elumi Konosu, a shopping mall, has Japan’s largest pyramid of hina dolls. It shows almost 1,800 dolls from February to March. The biggest pyramid in Japan is 7 meters high and has 31 levels. Visitors may also admire the many dolls stretched out on a brilliant red rug. The festival’s name, “Surprise,” honors the city’s cultural past and the beauty of kimono.

Dojima Yakushido Setsubun Omizukumi Festival
Setsubun is a Japanese event. It marks the end of winter and the day before spring. Many people believe it chases away bad spirits. Residents throw beans at people dressed as devils to drive them out of shops and houses. The Dojima Yakushido celebrations include Goma-daki and omizukumi. Goma-daki is a fire-tossing ceremony. Omizukumi is a water-drawing ritual. Visitors can have their water sanctified by a priest from the famed Nara temple Yakushido. Customers and workers at Kita-Shinchi banish demons by throwing beans of good fortune at them.

Kamihinokinai Paper Ballon Festival
On February 10, gigantic paper balloons are launched into the midwinter night sky. They are adorned with hand-drawn images of warriors and beautiful ladies. These hand-drawn balloons, up to 12 meters tall, are built like hot air balloons and launched between 18:00 and 20:30. As the release time approaches, a fire is set within the balloons, causing the air to heat up. With a loud countdown, the giant balloons rise into the night sky. They create a dreamlike image.

Namahage Sedo Festival
The festival is on the second Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of February. The namahage come down the mountain at 7:30 p.m. The festival starts at 6 p.m. with a giant bonfire in the town’s main square. It uses enough wood to heat a house in winter. Many people pay their respects at the shrine, illuminated by red paper lanterns. At 7:25 p.m., fifteen namahage descended from the mountain. Each carried a torch and shouted, “Are there any crybabies around?” or “Are there any naughty kids around?” in the local Akita dialect. They then grab children they suspect are naughty or lazy. They set them straight forever.

Odawara Plum Blossom Festival
The Odawara Plum Festival will be at Soga Bairin. It has 35,000 plums with a view of Sacred Peak Fuji. The festival will also be at Odawara Castle Ruins Park, which has 250 plums. They bloom against the castle tower, copper gate, and Tokiwa Kibashi. . The event will sell special products and hold a cafeteria at Soga Bairin. A Ritsuharu Aozora Kukai will be at Odawara Castle Ruins Park.
