5 Best Places to Visit in Kyoto During Autumn

tt

Autumn leaves are a uniquely Japanese culture, and Kyoto’s autumn leaves are famous not only in Japan but all over the world for their beauty.

The beautiful fall foliage along with the historic world heritage temples and shrines is a recommended point unique to Kyoto.

Enjoy the wonderful contrast created by Japan’s four seasons as the leaves change from green to yellow to red to deep red!

1:Rurikoin Temple

On the second floor of the Shoin study, you can enjoy a magnificent view of hundreds of maple trees.

The leaves filling the windows and the sight of them reflected on the desks is mystical.

The lacquered corridor is polished to a shine, and the autumn leaves outside are reflected here as well, which is why it is called “floor maple.” Because it is rare to see this anywhere else, it is also called “phantom maple”.

Best season: Mid-November to late November

Type of foliage: Maple

3:Eikando Temple

Eikando has long been known as the “Eikando of Maple Leaves”

The scenery of the approximately 3,000 maple trees dyed red is overwhelmingly attractive.

We recommend the night illumination, as you can enjoy a mystical view of the autumn leaves that is different from the daytime.

5:Sagano Trolley

The trolley train runs at a speed similar to that of a slightly faster bicycle. This allows you to enjoy the nature and beauty of the valleys along the Hozu River.

For around 25 minutes, you can leisurely enjoy the different scenery of each season:cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves, barren fields in winter, and sometimes snowy scenery.

Fall Season: September to November
Starting in mid-October, the “Illusion Train of Light” runs through illuminated landscapes during twilight, offering passengers a mystical and enchanting view.

Summary

Autumn leaves are a must-see. Traveling to foliage spots by train or bus can be crowded, and you might not have much time to enjoy the scenery.

A campervan is recommended as it allows you to visit multiple autumn foliage spots in a single day.
